CircuPlantection
Nettle extracts for plant protection
The transition to a bio-based economy requires the development of new concepts to ensure the economical and environmentally friendly production of plant-based raw materials. The goal of CircuPLANTection is the local cultivation testing, production, and technical development of plant-strengthening nettle extracts to promote the health of economically important crops in North Rhine-Westphalia that are acutely threatened by pathogens and climate change. A two-stage innovation strategy is being pursued. Stage 1 aims at the immediate utilization of plant-strengthening extracts for plant protection in order to ensure the economical production of key crops in the regional bioeconomy.
By testing the efficacy of extracts from a diverse range of nettle accessions and testing their cultivation on local land, the optimal basis for this will be established and prototypes will be provided for practical testing. Stage 2 will focus on developing an innovative process to improve the efficacy, storage stability, and user-friendliness of extracts through targeted fermentation with the help of selected microbes and the use of environmentally friendly capsule formulations based on renewable raw materials. The collaborative project thus serves the development and local implementation of an effective and environmentally friendly, circular crop protection concept to strengthen the bioeconomy in North Rhine-Westphalia.
